Bangalore to Kodai is a journey through road that many will dread..and when it is on a bike and that too in a rainy weather..well not many are eager to join you in the madness. But no stopping us, two roadies Amit and me. Once we had the plan and the desire, even the declining of rest of the people didn’t deter us. So on the night of Independence Day we started the trip that many had advised against, but couldn’t hide their desire because of the excitement that it promised.
The first problem was the petrol since the bunks are closed on I day. But luckily we found one where we could fill our tank and start. It was drizzling and the traffic was surprisingly heavy at half past twelve in night. After negotiating the traffic till hosur, we realized that the rain had stopped completely and in fact it had not rained there at all. We started cursing till we crossed Salem. The road after that was not good. Because of the road doubling work, there were many diversions. By morning we could reach Karur if I am not mistaken. After that the road condition improved. The driving was fun. But being a pillion was tough as the sleepless night was starting to take its toll. Many times the one sitting on the back seat will fall asleep. This continued till we reached Dindigull where we ha
d to take diversion towards Kodai. The drive after this was full of fun as the hills started before its too long and the road was in good condition. One of the differences between the ghat road of Ooty and Kodai is that though the ghat is stiffer in Ooty the distance you have to travel in case of Kodai is much longer. The ghat section is atleast 50 km long. It’s always a pleasure to ride on ghat roads and this time we decided to share the honors and each rode for half the distance. We reached Kodai at noon and found a really nice place to stay- the Woody’s. The Woody’s people were in fact very happy to see two guys coming to Kodai on bike from Bangalore (most of them were Kannadigas). The two days were real pleasure. With no thought of the complex world of Bangalore and all ill thoughts vanishing from the mind after seeing the beautiful places, we could relax and enjoy “The Tourists” were good as they always are.
The coming back on Sunday was not that eventful. We were determined to reach Bangalore before night. Always keeping a watch on time, we rode with an average of 50. We could cover the whole distance in 10 and half hours to reach Bangalore by 6:30. This ended one more adventure on bike.
I think I am starting to understand what it means to travel long distance on bikes. The going is always tough but enjoyable and memorable but the coming back is when you can cover more distance in short time and plan things more accurately. Also it’s more important to have a long enough gap between them for the body and the bike to recover properly. And finally you have to take care of your bike, the more you protect it the better it responds.
Road Map: Bnagalore-hosor(30km, NH7)-salem(170Km, NH7)-Dundigul-(185km, Towards Madurai and Combatore)-Kodaikanal(90km)
Road Condition: Excellent but u ll face so many small bad patches in between and heavy wind.
As a whole you will enjoy the sceneries and long highway drives.
